The 6 Day tour in the Democratic Republic of Congo To Hike Nyigongo volcano and see the Low land and mountain Gorillas, starts in Cyangugu and ends ends in Gisenyi at The border of Rwanda and Congo. The tour takes you to the Democratic Republic of Congo, another home to the endangered Gorillas in Africa. Lowland Gorillas are found in Kahuzi Biega national park and the critically endangered mountain gorillas are found in famous Virunga National Park.

Itineraries

Day 1

Transfer to Bukavu in Congo

Meet you in Cyangugu at the Rwanda Congo border, and Transfer you in Bukavu. Bukavu is a city in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), lying at the extreme south-eastern extent of Lake Kivu, west of Cyangugu in Rwanda, and separated from it by the outlet of the Ruzizi River. It is the capital of the South Kivu province. Kahuzi-Biéga National Park, a World Heritage Site and one of two homes of the Eastern Lowland Gorilla, is close to the city and can be accessed from the road to Kavumu. The park headquarters at Tshivanga is located 31 km from Bukavu.

Day 2

Low Land Gorillas Tracking in kahuzi Biega

After early Breakfast – transfer by our tourist car to the National Park to begin the trekking. Trekking for 2 to 3 hours in mountainous jungle area of Kahuzi Biega National Park, to find the large lowland gorilla family. The species here are Eastern Lowland Gorilla, very different from the more famous Mountain Gorillas found in the Virunga National Park. Unlike the chimpanzee-like lowland gorillas found in Gabon and Congo Brazzaville, The Kahuzi Biega gorillas are large, about the size of the mountain gorilla, so you definitely won’t be disappointed. Late in the afternoon you will be transferred to your hotel in Bukavu.

Day 3

Transfer to Goma by Boat

Early Morning after break fast at your hotel transfer you at the port where a boat is waiting for you. After presenting your ticket, Board a motor launch in Bukavu across Lake Kivu to Goma. This cruise will pass by many islands and provide great views of misty rainforest, terraced plantations, and steep cliffs that border Africa’s highest elevation lake. Enjoy time at leisure to explore at your own pace, or relax at your hotel.

Day 4

Transfer to Goma by Boat

Very early in the morning, you will depart from Goma and Drive up to the Virunga national park station where you will be briefed about the dos and don’ts while you are with the Gorillas. After the briefing, you proceed for the memorable adventure of gorilla tracking. This rather strenuous but unforgettable adventure will take you through thick and muddy environment, and may take you 2-4 hours to locate the amazing apes, depending on their movements. After a maximum period of one hour with the Gorillas, you descend to the headquarters where the driver will transfer you to Goma for Dinner and overnight.

Day 5

Climb Nyiragongo volcano

After an early breakfast your driver will be there to pick you up and drive you to the impressive Nyiragongo volcano. You will start hiking at 10 AM in the morning. You will get a backpack from Matoke tours which includes; a lunch package, warm fleece vest and a sleeping bag. You will have a personal cook preparing a hot meal at the summit. You can hire a porter to carry your luggage at US$ 24 per porter to be paid on ground. In the evening you will reach the top with an extraordinary view of the crater filled with sea of lava. You are one of the few persons to admire this spectacle. After a nice hot meal prepared by the cook, you will sleep in one of the huts on the crater rim. Please note that the huts on the crater rim are basic shelters.

The Nyiragongo is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Recently erupted in 2002 creating a mass destruction of Goma city where the lava lakes can still be seen and important buildings have been destroyed by it.

Day 6

Back From Nyiragongo volcano

In the morning you will enjoy your breakfast with the breathtaking view overlooking the Nyiragongo crater before you descend. Around noon you will be back at base camp.

After this amazing experience it is time to relax. Your driver/guide will take you to Goma the cross the border to Rwanda.
