NYAMIRAMBO WOMEN’S CENTRE

The Nyamirambo Women’s Centre was launched in 2007 by 18 Rwandese women living in Nyamirambo, Kigali. Together they created a project which aimed to address gender-based violence, gender inequality and discrimination. Today it provides education and vocational training to women who do not have the means to pay for such training on their own, so that they can gain better opportunities for employment.
In pursuing this mission, NWC has 3 overall objectives:
To strengthen the institutional and organizational capacity of NWC
To promote and empower women through capacity development and employment
To promote women and community-based tourism

Nyamirambo runs three outstanding community based tours:

Gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes National Park that is termed as one of the unforgettable experience not to miss when given a chance, Although you will have been well assured that the gorillas are habituated, chances are you have never seen one, habituated or otherwise, the experience is exciting and your trekking is quite enjoyable through the forest. Golden Monkey Trekking

The rare Golden Monkeys that live in the bamboo vegetation towards the base of the volcanoes, The habituation has helped them to overcome their initial shyness to accept their daily visit, They are very active creatures, and jump from tree to tree which is really interesting and a little difficult to photograph! The golden monkey trek is worth going for while in Volcanoes National Park and if you’re interested in wildlife, this is a rare and delightful experience not to be missed!

Mt Bisoke Hike

The Bisoke hike is guided, This hike climbs to the top of Mt. Bisoke, It is a strenuous and challenging and if you’re going for it, it’s best to set aside a full day to do only the hike as it requires you to have energy. You will be advised not to attempt this hike if you are unfit because you may stop halfway and turn back. Once at the top, it’s very beautiful and totally worth the effort, you are rewarded with magnificent views of the forest and the Crater Lake.

Karisoke Reasearch Centre

Dr. Dian Fossey founded the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda’s Virungas Mountains in 1967, to protect and study the endangered mountain gorillas. Although Fossey’s life was cut short, her work has continued through the Karisoke Research Center and grown into conservation efforts for other wildlife and programs for people who live near the gorillas, The incredible visit is both emotional and Intellectual learning about someone who was so dedicated and left legacy that exist even Today.

Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park is the largest National park in Rwanda that is found in the North east edge of the country covering 1,085km, This National Park was founded in 1934, it boarders Tanzania and incorporates Akagera River, This is one of the National Park that is diverse and scenic of Africa in terms of Landscape and one where you can drive for some hours without encountering another vehicle.

Bird Watching – Akagera & Beyond

Nyungwe Forest National Park

The Nyungwe National park is the tropical rainforest and of Rwanda main protected areas lies on the south western slopes of the highland region that forms the great divide between congo and the Nile drainage system. This National park is home of 310 species of birds, roughly 400 species of chimpanzees, a home to one of East Africa’s last intact populations and boasts two wild chimp communities that welcome guests (one in Cyamudungo and other around Uwinka). Thus, it’s not surprising that chimpanzee tracking is a popular activity in Nyungwe especially when the park’s trees are in full bloom during the summer.

Chimpanzees

Noisy and curious, intelligent and social, the chimpanzee is the mammal most like a human. Chimpanzees fascinate humans and are favorites both in zoos and the wild, Chimps live in groups called troops, and these large groups are made up of smaller, very flexible groups of just a few animals, perhaps all females, all males or a mixed group. The chimpanzee has a thickset body with long arms, short legs and no tail, much of the body is covered with long black hair, but the face, ears, fingers and toes are bare. They have hands that can grip firmly, allowing them to pick up objects. The discovery that they used “tools” for certain purposes surprised the world, you don’t want to miss out this experience while in Nyungwe National park.

Canopy Walk

The Canopy walk in Rwanda is found in Nyungwe National Park trip found at the Uwinka visitor’s center in the Nyungwe forest. The walk way has a 160 Meter stretch divided in 3, sections.The first is a 45Meter stretch, followed by the longest at 90Meters and the shortest at 25meters.The highest point from the 90 Meter walk way is 70meters from ground. The canopy walk is a 30 minutes a guided tour via the Igishigishi Trail in a steep slope deep into the forest to the starting point of the walk way. The walkway can however be done via the long trails of Imbaraga or the Umuyove. Many primates’ birds, butterflies can be spotted from the Top of the Canopy walkway with also great views of the entire forest canopy including Lake Kivu on a clear day.

Bird Watching – Nyungwe

Bird Watching – Nyungwe is probably one of the most important bird watching destination in Rwanda with more than 280 bird species recorded of which the majority are forest specialists and 26 are regional endemics whose range is restricted to a few forests, Bird watching in Nyungwe can be rather frustrating, since the vegetation is thick and many birds tend to stick to the canopy, but almost everything you see ranks as a good sighting.

You don’t have to be an ardent birdwatcher to appreciate some of Nyungwe’s birds.
